FCL, LCL and groupage shipping

FCL gives one shipper the use of a full container. It is often economical once volume rises, and it reduces handling because the container is stuffed at origin and not opened again until it reaches the consignee or the clearance point. For fragile, high-value or sequence-sensitive cargo that reduction in handling can matter more than the rate.

LCL or groupage combines smaller consignments in a shared container and is charged by volume or weight, whichever produces the higher figure. It suits shipments that cannot fill a container, but it adds a consolidation step at origin and a deconsolidation step at destination, both of which take time and both of which are outside any single shipper's control.

We compare the complete landed cost rather than recommending a mode from freight price alone. A shipment that is close to filling a 20-foot container will often land cheaper and sooner as FCL than as LCL once handling, deconsolidation and the extra days are counted.

Containers and non-standard cargo

Standard 20-foot and 40-foot containers suit most general cargo, and 40-foot high-cube units add internal height for volumetric loads. Reefer equipment is used for accepted temperature-sensitive goods and requires an agreed set-point and a stated commodity before booking.

Open-top and flat-rack equipment handles cargo that cannot load through the door of a closed box — machinery, structural steel, plant items and construction materials. Cargo that exceeds flat-rack capacity moves as breakbulk or out-of-gauge, which is priced on dimensions and stowage rather than on a container rate.

Out-of-gauge and breakbulk bookings need drawings, weights, lifting points and centre of gravity before a carrier will confirm. Supplying those at enquiry stage is the difference between a quote in a day and a quote in a week.

Equipment commonly arranged through Dubai:

  • 20-foot and 40-foot standard containers for general cargo
  • 40-foot high-cube for volumetric or lightweight loads
  • Reefer containers for accepted temperature-controlled cargo
  • Open-top for cargo loaded by crane through the roof
  • Flat-rack for over-width or over-height machinery and plant
  • Breakbulk and out-of-gauge stowage for project pieces

Jebel Ali import clearance and delivery

Before arrival we check the bill of lading, invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and any commodity permits. We then coordinate the correct mainland, free-zone, re-export or transit declaration through Mirsal 2, arrange terminal release, container collection and delivery.

Jebel Ali is operated by DP World and is the largest container port in the Middle East, with the JAFZA free zone adjacent to it. Whether the consignee sits inside JAFZA or on the mainland changes the declaration type, and getting that wrong is the most common cause of clearance delay we see. It is confirmed at booking, not at arrival.

Port Rashid is closer to the Port Saeed office and handles general cargo, which can suit particular consignees and cargo types. Khalifa Port and KIZAD in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah's Hamriyah and Khor Fakkan, Fujairah and Ajman are arranged where the carrier routing or the delivery point makes them a better gateway.

Free time, demurrage and detention

Every container booking carries a period of free time at the port and a period for returning the empty unit. Once those expire, demurrage accrues on the container sitting at the terminal and detention accrues on the unit being held outside it. Both are charged by the carrier and neither is negotiable after the fact.

These charges are avoidable and they are almost always caused by document problems rather than transport problems. A permit that was not applied for, an invoice value that triggers a query, a consignee whose trade licence has expired — each of those turns into daily charges while it is resolved.

We monitor arrival dates against free-time deadlines and raise document gaps before the vessel berths rather than after. Where a delay is genuinely unavoidable, telling the consignee early is what gives them the option to arrange storage instead of accruing demurrage.

Documents to have ready before a sea shipment arrives in Dubai:

  • Commercial invoice showing the buyer, seller, incoterm, currency and value
  • Packing list with package count, dimensions and gross and net weights
  • Transport document — the bill of lading for sea freight, the air waybill for air freight
  • Certificate of origin, where the commodity or the importer's requirements call for one
  • Import permits or approvals for any controlled or regulated commodity
  • The consignee's trade licence and customs code, matching the declaration type

Frequently asked questions

Should I use FCL or LCL shipping to Dubai?

LCL suits smaller shipments that can share a container. FCL usually offers a lower unit cost and fewer handling points as volume rises, and a shipment close to filling a 20-foot container often lands cheaper as FCL once deconsolidation and extra days are counted. We compare both using the cubic volume, weight, commodity and delivery date.

Which Dubai ports do you use?

Sea freight is handled primarily through Jebel Ali Port and Port Rashid. Khalifa Port and KIZAD, Sharjah, Fujairah and Ajman can be arranged when the carrier routing or consignee location makes them a better fit.

Can you quote door-to-door container shipping?

Yes. A quote can include supplier pickup, export handling, ocean freight, Dubai customs clearance, port charges, container haulage and final delivery.

What are demurrage and detention charges?

Demurrage accrues when a container stays at the terminal beyond its free time; detention accrues when the unit is held outside the port beyond the agreed period. Both are carrier charges. They are usually caused by document gaps, which is why we check paperwork before the vessel berths.

How much does sea freight to Dubai cost?

Ocean rates depend on origin, equipment type, volume or weight, commodity, season and the services included. Rates are not published because they move frequently. Send the shipment details for a current itemised quote covering freight, clearance and delivery separately.

Can you ship oversized or out-of-gauge cargo by sea?

Yes, using open-top, flat-rack, breakbulk or out-of-gauge stowage subject to carrier acceptance. Send cargo drawings, dimensions, gross weight, lifting points and centre of gravity so the equipment and stowage can be confirmed.
